You Gotta Tabata

The What: Tabata is a research-based exercise theory that high-intensity interval training burns the most calories and increases one's fitness levels, resulting in remarkable results.

Founded by Izumi Tabata in Japan, Tabata tested two groups of athletes comparing high intensity training with high intensity interval training. He discovered that the athletes training in high intensity training improved their aerobic systems as well as their anaerobic systems. The athletes who only trained at moderate high intensity levels improved only their aerobic system and had little to no increase in their anaerobic system. The key to Tabata interval training is intensity.

Tabata is a high intensity workout that is proven to be the single most effective type of "high intensity interval training” (otherwise known as HIIT) with remarkable results for fitness improvement and weight loss. Exercise physiologists have confirmed that Tabata style training has "much better results than aerobic training alone." Tabata pushes you to your physical and mental limit!

Tabata is one of the most efficient and effective ways to:

  • Improve aerobic and anaerobic capacity (translation: this creates endurance, which means you can go longer for challenging stretches)

  • Improve resting metabolic rate (translation: increase your metabolism. Your body’s metabolism continues to burn more calories post workout for up to 24 hours then steady state aerobic.)

  • Burn more fat

Here’s the JoyRide formula:

After a 4- to 5-minute warm up, riders will go as hard as they can (100% maximum intensity) for 20 seconds followed by a 10 second recovery. By “go as hard as they can,” we mean 100 percent maximum intensity.  And repeat!  These drills are repeated for four minutes, with one minute of rest, for seven rounds.
