DEB CONRY’S STRESS-BUSTING TIPS FOR THE NEW YEAR
f you haven’t met the new JoyRide instructor Deb Conry yet, there is no doubt you’ve seen her enormous smile and infectious positive energy at JoyRide! She teaches indoor cycling with a twist: 35 minutes of intense cardio on the bike and 25 minutes of guided meditation off the bike, in Studio 2. In order to get our new year off to the right start, we asked her how she stays so positive and stress-free.
She credits it to learning about the mantras and spirituality of Yoga Nidra, a state of ultimate relaxation, which helps her regulate stress and tension and maintain energy levels. Deb offers several easy-to-do, free tools to help enter 2017 with less stress, more energy and more JOY:
Did you know that if your exhale is longer than your inhale, it can activate the relaxation response in your brain and soothe your nervous system. Try it! When you feel triggered by stress, breathe in through your nose (or mouth - whichever is most natural) for a count of four and breathe out for a count of six or more. Repeat a few times. The lowered heart rate and regulation of your nerves will help you re-center so you can think and act with a clear, calm head.
2. Create a mantra for your name.
Pick a positive affirmation for every letter in your name (ie. Determined Enthusiastic Brave). As you breathe in, silently say "I am.” As you breathe out, say "your affirmation" and repeat for each letter. Remind yourself of these positive attributes to give you confidence any time you need a pick-me-up.
3. Make a positive playlist.
I call this my “Lift Me Higher Playlist!” Music is a powerful motivator and can evoke strong emotions. So why not create a playlist that can instantly make you feel better at home, in the car or on a run?
