Where can we find you when you’re not at JoyRide?
When I’m not at JoyRide, I’m educating the young minds of tomorrow at Staples High School! I am currently in my third year teaching English and I LOVE my job teaching reading and writing 9th grade through 12th grade. When I’m not at work, you can find me in the kitchen cooking up meals for my week or at the yoga studio for some hot vinyasa. Check out my meal prep on my Instagram: samiginz
What is your all-time favorite book and why?
As a lover of literature, this is a tough one for me, but my all-time favorite book is The History of Love by Nicole Strauss. I love how the multiple story lines come together in unexpected ways. This is the only book to date that has induced tears. I read this book when I was in high school when I did not find pleasure in reading, and this book helped me find my way back into literature. I also must confess that my favorite book to teach is Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I think Dickens is a linguistic genius, whose colorful and vivid character descriptions tantalize me. I love to talk about books!
Which quality/qualities do you most admire in others?
I value honesty, commitment, and sincere effort. I have high expectations for my students, for my peers, for my POUND enthusiasts… everyone!
What was the best advice someone ever gave you?
My mom always reminds me that life is a journey, not a destination. I am always anxious to get to the next “thing,” and I'm learning how to not build up expectations, but rather to live in the present moment! I think this is something that we all struggle with, and I’m striving to stay mindful and present.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
When I was in high school, I used to be extremely shy and introverted. It was not until college that I really blossomed into my bubbly and effervescent self!
What’s your idea of perfect happiness?
Ohh. This is an interesting question. I don’t think there is such a thing! But I do know what makes me happy. I love cooking/baking food for my loved ones and eating a festive meal together, from small dinner parties to big holidays with family. I love the feeling that I get just after a sweaty exercise class where I know my muscles are going to be sore the next day. I love dancing on a stage, performing for a big crowd. I love to be surrounded by my immediate family, but I also do love spending time alone too! A combination of food, fitness, and family are my recipe for
How would your friends describe you?
Energetic, bubbly, happy, level-headed, nerdy, excitable, always hungry
Do you have a favorite charity? What is it / why?
I have two charities that are dear to me. The first is the Michael J. Fox Foundation; my mom has Parkinson’s Disease, and they are raising money for a cure, hopefully in her lifetime! The second is Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, as I was an avid participant in UCONN’s HuskyTHON when I was a student there, and I continue to contribute to this amazing event every year.
